OSCE co-organizes photo exhibition on freedom of speech and information in Armenia

“Freedom of Press: the Right to Know” is the theme of an exhibition that opened in Yerevan on 5 May 2014 to mark the World Press Freedom Day.

It is already for the fourth year that the Freedom of Information Centre, in co-operation with the EU Delegation to Armenia and the OSCE Office in Yerevan, organize such an exhibition.

Its aim is to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of exercising the right to information, and to remind the government, media representatives and the public at large of their role in observing this right. More than 70 photos and caricatures displayed in the exhibition will be published in a special catalogue devoted to International Press Freedom Day.

“This is my third World Press Freedom Day in Armenia,” Oliver McCoy, Democratization Programme Officer at the OSCE Office in Yerevan said. “It is indeed impressive to observe the event’s development over these years, and its organizers’ commitment to showcasing fundamental freedoms and human rights in action.”

Shushan Doydoyan, the President of the Freedom of Information Centre, said: “This year there was a lot of interest towards the exhibition: we received more than 350 photos and caricatures on the topic. The people shown on the photos and the photographers voice their disagreement with violence against journalists and violation of press freedom, and assert their right to access information despite the obstacles and barriers they face,”

World Press Freedom Day is marked across the globe every May to commemorate the fundamental principles of media freedom, help guarantee and promote the freedom of information and to remind civil society organizations, other relevant stakeholders, and the media in particular, of their central part in it.
